On This Free 60-Minute

Live Training, You'll Discover:

  • The two questions that are still resetting relationships years after families first ask them, and why asking them beats months of lectures, threats, or consequences (plus exactly how to ask them yourself, this week)

  • The "Goldilocks Zone" almost no parent has heard of: why more rules and tighter consequences quietly push your teen further away (and the exact shift that opens the door back up)

  • How to change your relationship with your teen without changing your teen, and why this works better than trying to fix their behavior: the reframe I've used with hundreds of families to turn defiance into connection

  • A framework for hearing your teen say something kind again, in days, not years: the exact shift Amanda used to go from "my daughter doesn't respect me" to her daughter saying, "You're doing a good job, Mom," after years without a real conversation

This Live Free Training Is For You If:

  • You never know which version of your teen you're going to get...

... One day they're fine, the next you're walking on eggshells wondering what will set them off. You're exhausted from managing their moods before you've even said anything. You're ready for calm to be the norm, not the exception.

  • You're trying to help but your teen hears nagging...

... Your reminders and questions get eye-rolls, annoyed sighs, or silence back. You know your intention isn't landing the way you mean it. You're ready to say the same things in a way they can actually hear.

  • Your teen is pulling away and it feels personal...

... The disrespect, the silence, the slammed door, it's hard not to read it as rejection. You're starting to wonder if you're losing them for good. You're ready to understand what's actually happening underneath it.

  • Your teen would rather be anywhere but with you...

... They're out with friends or alone in their room, and when you try to talk, you get “you don't get it.” You've almost given up on getting a real answer out of them. You're ready for one honest conversation, even a short one.

  • You know you're not perfect, but you can't see what you're doing wrong...

... You're doing your best, yet the tension keeps building anyway. You suspect you're sending signals you don't mean to send. You're ready for someone to show you, gently, what you can't see yourself.

  • You keep waiting for your teen to be the one who changes...

... You've tried talking, tried consequences, tried giving space, and nothing sticks. Deep down you wonder if the shift actually needs to start with you. You're ready to try that instead.

My Why

Hi. I’m Kristin MacDermott, and I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist. For more than 25 years, I've worked with an unusually wide range of people: cancer patients and burned-out nurses, military families and first responders, couples, parents, and students in schools ranging from inner city public schools to military academies to elite private schools.

But whether it was a disease, deployment, career or life stressor, my work almost always came back to the same thing: families.

When they function well, families are our greatest source of love, support, resilience and joy. But too often, for a multitude of reasons, some as serious as illness or loss, some as ordinary as raising a teenager, families become our greatest source of pain.

This isn't just theory for me. My three grown children call me almost daily just to share their lives with me, and that is the joy of my life. I've been married to their father for 34 years, and I consider that an accomplishment. Not that he hasn't been an absolute pleasure the whole time (right, honey), but relationships take work. Helping families find their way back to joy is my life's work.

Along the way I learned quite a lot about resilience. My resilience-training curriculum has been validated in multiple studies by researchers at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, published in peer-reviewed journals, and proven to promote clinically significant improvement in distress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and self-efficacy.

My resilience-training programs have been used by Navy SEALs, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Institutes of Health, and more than 20 hospitals across the country, and funded by institutions like the National Cancer Institute, Pfizer, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

But none of that matters as much as this:

In 2018, I decided to bring everything I know about resilience and bonding through difficult times to teen mental health and parenting teens.

This training is built on my mission to put the joy back in families. I hope you will join me.
